Welcome to Tampa Approach West Sector.

The frequency 125.3 MHz is active usually from about 8AM to 6PM local time and is used for the Tampa West Sector for lower altitudes. 118.8 MHz is for the West Sector, higher altitudes. However during night hours, 118.8 MHz is being used in combined operation and covers both, the lower and the higher altitudes. Due to this fact we transmit 125.3 MHz during the day and 118.8 MHz at night.

This portion of Tampa Approach/Departure controls the west sector of Tampa and includes Tampa (KTPA), St. Petersburg International Airport (KPIE), Clearwater Airpark (KCLW) and Albert Withed Airport (KSPG).

This section of Tampa Approach delivers radar service in airspace Class B to separate and sequence IFR and controlled VFR traffic.

Tampa itself has many radar sectors. Often you hear a 'hand-off' to another Tampa Approach frequency.

Departing aircraft from KPIE, using Class B service, are usually cleared to 1600ft and then handed off to Tampa Approach. The radar controller usually comes with 'radar contact' which means he sees you on his radar scope.

VFR traffic in and out of KPIE under 'negative class B' does not have to talk to Tampa as long as the traffic is clear of the Class B airspace.
