Welcome to St. Petersburg/Clerawater Int'l Ground Control (KPIE)

Ground controls all taxiways and non-active runways. Additionally, clearances are delivered through the ground control frequency since our airport is not that busy for a dedicated 'clearance delivery' frequency is needed.

A typical communication sequence would look like this:

N4314L: "Warrior 4314L, schoolyard, request VFR departure to the West, negative class Bravo, have ATIS information Delta".

Ground: "Warrior 4314L, taxy to runway 35R, intersection Mike."

N4314L:" taxiing to 35R, via Mike."

If the above request would be 'positive class Bravo', the ground controller would come additionally with a Class B clearance which looks like that:

Ground: "N4314L, after departure fly runway heading, climb and maintain 1600, departure frequency is 125.3, squawk 0132".

The pilot has to 'read back' at least the squawk code but better reads back the whole clearance sequence to be sure he copied it flawlessly.

During lesser busy times the Ground Control Frequency is often combined with the Tower frequency. In this case one controller handles both duties, ground and tower.
